Lent

Beyond Oppression – Lenten prayer 2017

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.  For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

I Can’t Imagine – Lenten Prayer 2017

Dear Father in Heaven,

This past week has been somewhat physically challenging with the chronic muscle pain in my arm and the muscle tightness in my upper back.  Although the discomfort is tolerable I’m becoming a bit weary.  However the timing of all this seems rather fitting as I tried to imagine what Jesus went through.   (more…)

Invitation of Grace – Lenten Prayer

Sweet Jesus, you rock my world.  You did the unimaginable.  Even thinking about what you went through before your crucifixion, it’s beyond my human comprehension.  Yes, I can understand the facts, know it by heart, but to try to remotely empathize with the emotional and physical aspects of what you went through is mind rattling.   (more…)

Walk me through your son’s story

Dear Father in Heaven, there are a few pictures in my photo album that I would like to tear up, as I think I look awful or some photos ignite a negative reaction in me.  I confess that I have a similar reaction to your holy word as there are some stories I’d like to rip out.  They often cause me heartache in some form, whether it’s anger, guilt, deep sorrow or that they’re beyond my scope of comprehension.  I tend to read them very quickly and not take the quest for deeper understanding and knowledge.  Forgive me Lord, for my lack of patience and for not grappling with my own ignorance.

Let Us Value Lent

This past Wednesday was the first day of lent.

Just out of curiosity I searched both Facebook and Twitter to check how many posts there were about lent.  I was a bit disheartened to see there were very few.  Although lent is a very personal journey, the practice of this sacred tradition should be more acknowledged and encouraged.  It’s so easy to be complacent, nonchalant; another year, another lent, but when we do that we rob ourselves, our families and our church communities from fully receiving God’s inheritance. Lenten Prayer 2017

Dear Father in Heaven,

It’s that time of year again.  Today is the beginning of lent.  Somehow it’s more necessary this year.  As you know I look forward to the lenten journey as it’s the time to focus on you, to seek solace, break away from the self-centredness of life, to be more conscious of your Holy Spirit and to be reminded of your greatest sacrifice.  How deeply honoured am I to have such a meaningful tradition passed down from generations which is still essential to our spiritual vitality today.
